“What a lovely thought, Jason,” Hayley interjected, smiling.

He didn’t want to argue in front of the others, so Alex settled for a

nod and a murmured, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Jason ruffled his hair and started stuffing his

face.

When Alex finished breakfast, he had a session to attend with

Hayley, and wandered to the back of the house after dropping the book off in his room. Her office door stood ajar, and he could see her sitting at her desk, typing something into the computer. They’d had a computer at the farm, but it was so ancient the thing took forever to start up and even longer to load up the Internet. Grams bought it secondhand for them when they started high school level work.

“You coming in, Alex?” Hayley prodded him from his thoughts.

Alex entered her office and shut the door. He sat down in one of the

chairs facing her desk. “Sorry, just thinking about Grams.”

Hayley gave him a sympathetic look. “We never really talked about

how you came to live with your grandmother. Were your parents

deceased?”

“No, they weren’t.” Alex shifted uncomfortably. He didn’t really

like talking about his parents. He knew his father cared about them. Up until they’d had to leave the farm, he’d sent money to Grams for their care. It was how they’d managed to stay living on the farm without having a job. “Our father sent us to live with Grams when our abilities

manifested.”

“Why is that? Was he afraid you’d be discovered?” Hayley pried

gently.

Alex shrugged. “I’m sure that was part of it as well, but the real

reason came down to being because our mother tried to drown us when

she realized what we could do.”

Hayley made a small sound in her throat. “I’m so sorry, Alex.”

“It was a long time ago. I don’t even remember them, to be honest.

Our father sent money every month to Grams to take care of us. I’m

guessing they’re still alive, since the money kept coming even after Grams died. They never came to her funeral.” Bitterness coated Alex’s tone. Even after all this time, they still hadn’t found it in them to accept him and His Salvation
